Today, Brian and I booked our room for the wedding. While we are getting married about twenty minutes from home, it seemed reasonable to stay somewhere other than our apartment on our wedding night. At first we thought we'd stay in one of the hotels at which we have blocks of rooms for our guests, but when neither hotel would cut us a deal, we decided we might enjoy staying elsewhere. In our searching, we found the aloft hotel at the National Harbor. They have a deal where, if you stay two nights, you get a third night free. We'd been thinking that I might stay at the hotel the night before the wedding too, so this seemed perfect. We went today to scope out the rooms and ended up booking a suite for three nights. Very exciting!
Since my last post we have also booked the location and caterer for our rehearsal dinner, received our invitations, and planned our respective parties. I'm headed to Miami with a few of my favorite women (sadly, not everyone can make it) at the end of April and Brian and his friends have a full day of activities planned in DC for the middle of May. Last weekend, I went back to Chicago for my first dress fitting, which was pretty successful, and this past week, Brian and I spent his lunch hour applying for passports in anticipation of booking a honeymoon outside of the US. Plus, plans are underway for showers in Chicago and Crofton, which is fun if somewhat overwhelming.
In the next week or so, we plan to hire a videographer, mail our invites, and make a decision regarding the honeymoon and the guys' attire. Then...nothing for awhile. I'm starting to think about all of the little things I could be working on (programs, escort card templates, a guest book, etc), but I am not going to let myself go down that road until I am finished with grad school (three weeks and counting, by the way).
Hope everyone's doing well!
Like most of us, I live my life as best I can, always wondering when "they" will figure out that I am almost always making it up as I go. But you've gotta have faith, right?

This is not something to be proud of, I know...
But sometimes it feels REALLY good to put a kid in their place a little. Not to be mean or anything like that, but just to knock them down a little. Case in point:
It is about 80 degrees in our classroom when it is full of students. At the start of my roommate's 2nd block class, she had a student clean the boards with a chemical spray. In order to avoid overheating and/or choking on chemical fumes, I opened two windows. (It is about 45 degrees outside.) 20 minutes in, one student asked me to please shut one window because it was too cold. 20 minutes after that...
Student: It is so cold in here. Why is it so cold? ::sees the open window and continues in an incredulous tone:: Why is a window open? Who would open a window?
Me: I would. I opened it after V- cleaned the boards so that the fumes from the spray didn't give everyone a headache.
Student: Oh. Right.
Me: Most of the smell is gone now. If you would like Ms. T- or I to close the window, you just have to ask.
Student: ... ... ... Do you mind if I close the window, it is cold in here?
Me: Of course not, thank you for asking.
Student: Right.
Like I said, it's not that I'm proud of being petty, but sometimes it's nice to remind the students that they are not in charge and they cannot talk to people anyway they want to.

More input needed
I was asked by my cousin-in-law-to-be (the one whose wedding I am attending in Palm Springs) to make the dessert for her bridal shower this Sunday. It will be about 15 women, it is at her house, and it is scheduled to run from 11am-2pm. Here are the ideas I have so far, I'm thinking I'd do at least two desserts so people have options. Let me know what you think sounds best:
Oreo truffles: basically Oreos crushed with cream cheese and coated with white chocolate

I have no idea what, exactly, the food selection will look like. Input appreciated, as always!
Strawberry-Mascarpone Trifle: I would make one big one from which everyone can serve themselves
Oreo truffles: basically Oreos crushed with cream cheese and coated with white chocolate
Mini lemon meringue pies or mini lemon tarts

Mini cheesecakes: probably regular cheesecake with a chocolate cookie crust and a fruit sauce

Almond bread pudding with raspberry sauce: I would make one big one from which everyone can serve themselves

Things I love
I spent my lunch browsing different websites (my usual routine) and came across some GORGEOUS things that I wanted to share. Generous, I know.

And what about this - it is supposed to snow here again tomorrow; this seems more enjoyable
Like this beautiful necklace (I actually REdiscovered this today)

And this awesome watch

Anyway, I guess that is all for now. Happy hump day, all!

Passing some time
I have 15 minutes until I have to be at a meeting and so I thought I would pass it writing a real update. I know it's been awhile, but, honestly, there's been so much going on that I can barely live through it, let alone chronicle and reflect on it. But, you know, I've got 15 minutes now so let's see what I can do...
SNOW(!)
No clever names for me - although the exclamation point is warranted. About two weeks ago, it snowed in DC for almost 30 consecutive hours. When it stopped, about 2.5 feet of snow had accumulated in our area. About 30 hours later, it began to snow again. This time it only snowed for about a day, but in that time another 1.5-2 feet of snow fell. People complained, they bemoaned their fate, they swore that when they lived in Canada/the Midwest/the Northeast people knew how to "deal with the snow," but the reality was that there was nothing any of us could do. Four to four and a half feet of snow landed on the DC area over the course of a week. A full ten days after the last snowflake fell and we can finally see the ground again - and rainstorms promise to do away with the rest. Except for the snow mountains they created in the RFK Stadium parking lot - those may never melt.
While everyone else fretted about being stuck inside, I was loving almost every minute of it. In a shocking development, the federal government closed for almost the whole week so Brian and I spent much of the week reading and watching movies/TV on DVDs and much less of the week working from home. We also braved the non-snowing days to have lunch with friends, go to the mall, and generally try to socialize with the outside world. I think it was a smart decision.
Work
A week off of work is awesome until you have to come back. Then it's completely overwhelming and stressful. Or, at least, it is for me. I was already walking a fine line between busy and insane and the "snow break" and a new project have pushed me over the edge a bit. I suspect I'll right myself this week, but until then it is not a pleasant world that I live in. Doesn't help that my students are, for the most part, diving headfirst into senioritis and, therefore, driving me crazy.
Next year, the position of academic intervention specialist will be open at my school. It is not a job I have considered in the past because it involves some aspects that I am not interested in and it takes me out of the classroom entirely, but my principal asked me to consider applying for it and so I am. Considering it. We are scheduled to sit down and talk more specifically about the position and how I would and would not be able to tailor it more towards my strengths and interests. But am I ready to leave the classroom? And, if so, is it for this job? Like I said, I'm considering it.
School
Grad school's good, although suffering at this moment from the craziness that is my work life. After this meeting ends tonight (hopefully by 7pm), I need to decamp at a coffeeshop and finish the paper that was due last night. Which I did not finish on time because I was at another work meeting from 6p-8p. And because I had to prep for said meetings. And lesson plan. ::sigh:: But, after this paper, only three rationales and one reflection essay wait between me and the LAST CLASS OF MY PROGRAM. That's right, folks, I am nine (hopefully) short weeks away from my degree. Hooray!
Wedding
This is going to shorter than I intended because I have two minutes to get to this meeting, but here are the highlights...
First dress fitting at the end of March! Gym joined and personal trainer hired so that I feel more confident about that whole show.
Cake ordered - ice cream it is!
Caterer hired!
Invitations designed and out for a printing quote as we speak.
Rehearsal dinner meeting scheduled for next week.
Florist meeting planned for next month.
Bachelor and bachelorette parties in the works.
It's really real...and I'm both excited and slightly nauseous. Normal, I suppose.
Okay, it is time for me to go. Hope everyone's week is starting off well.

Input needed
Okay ladies and gents (are there any gents who read this blog?), time to break out the advice.
In about a month, Brian and I are headed to Palm Springs, California for a wedding. His cousin is getting married and this is one of the trendiest, most hipstery couples I know (perhaps not saying much, but they are very trendy and hipstery). I would like to look good, feel comfortable, and fit in at the wedding. Needless to say, this is where I need your help.
The wedding is taking place here and the bride and groom take engagement photos like this. So the question is, which of these dresses do I wear?
Option #1

Option #2

Please disregard my disheveled appearance - it was a LONG day at work.
Okay, let me know your thoughts! And, thank you in advance.
